You have most certainly heard that obesity is now at critical levels in the area of pediatrics. In other words, our children are in jeopardy for major health problems, such as juvenile diabetes. Thank you, fast food! We are always in so much of a hurry to get to work or get home where there is more work to be done that stopping to buy hamburgers and French fries for dinner is the easiest way to feed our families. Well, it is now backfiring, and our children are the innocent victims.

It is not just what we eat, but also how we prepare the meals that we put on the table for our families that is of great concern. Yes, we realize that organically grown fruits and vegetables are healthier along with open range chickens that are not stuffed full of antibiotics are better for us to eat, but why are all of the healthier items so expensive? In today’s economy, there may not be a choice of what we can afford.

Nutritional awareness is becoming a vital part of how we are maintaining our overall well being and even plays an important role in how we deal with daily stressors. It is projected that this profession will continue to grow in demand, which makes it a great choice if you are interested in this field. What we use to take for granted is no more!

Choosing this profession can lead to a rewarding career with many challenges, plus opportunities for growth and advancement. Furthermore, since the new computer technology has made it possible to enroll into an online degree program in which we can go back to school from the convenience of our living rooms, deciding to earn a degree in nutrition is definitely a win-win situation!

You can start with an Associate’s degree, which is called a Dietetic Technician (DT) degree. Just be advised to only enter a program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE), which will then extend your status to a Dietetic Technician Registered or DTR. You will be able enter the workforce in such locations as a hospital, school, fitness center, community health department, or a nonprofit agency such as WIC (Women Infant and Children’s program).

A Bachelor’s degree is the level of education that is required to work as a nutritionist, but again, remember it is available online! Depending upon the degree program that you choose, you might be obligated to do an internship in either a school or clinic prior to graduating. The necessary classes of this degree will more than likely start off with the basic anatomy and physiology class, after which, you will advance into the areas of nutrition science, biology, biochemistry, genetics, infectious diseases, and professional ethics along with others specific to the degree plan that you have chosen.

The field of nutrition can include a variety of specializations that you can investigate prior to deciding where your interests lie. You could work as a sports nutritionist who assists athletes in their dietary needs to increase their endurance and strength specific to their activities.
